German drinking songs, polkas and the smell of fresh pretzels and grilling bratwursts filled the evening air on Sept. 21, the first day of Brontoberfest at Innovation Brew Works (IBW).
Originally a celebration held at an old-fashioned German wedding, Oktoberfest has become a staple celebration at breweries all around the world, with special beers released to mark the occasion.
This is the second year IBW has hosted the Brontoberfest celebration.
Isaias Soto, a first-year math graduate student and sales representative at the brewery, said the beer is the most important part of the event.
At IBW, that is the Bronctoberfest beer, a Märzen-style.
“The event we have going on surrounds the beer,” he said. “The Märzen style was originally intended for weddings and it was made at the very end of March as a last hurrah.”
Eric Bassett, operations brew manager, said it has a malty flavor profile with slight caramel notes and a dry finish.
Soto said this year’s Bronctoberfest beer is easy on the palate.
“[It is] nothing too sweet,” he said. “It’s a nice, really drinkable style, very low in bitterness.”
Giant pretzels with a choice of Bavarian Mustard or Bronco Brown Beer Cheese, as well as bratwursts, were also served to go along with the German theme.
Stein hoisting and stein racing, which are traditional Oktoberfest games, were also held.
After around five minutes, the ladies’ wrists began to shake with the weight of glasses they were hoisting, as the game revolved around competitors holding stein glasses full of liquid for as long as possible.
Stein racing involved competitors running as fast as possible with full stein glasses, while spilling the least amount of beer as possible.
Brianda Hernandez, a fourth-year geology student, won the stein hoisting competition on the women’s side.
She managed to hold her heavy stein glass for seven minutes and 30 seconds and was surprised at her win.
“It feels good!” she said. “Rock climbing paid off. It’s pretty impressive, I didn’t think I was going to last that long.”
Brewery visitors can enjoy food specials, German music, Bronctobefest décor, Bronctoberfest beer and themed trivia and bingo nights from now until Sept. 29. Cheers! Or as they say in German, prost!
