Science Council hosts annual fundraiser

By Sable Stevens

The Science Council is hosting their 7th annual casino night
fundraiser this Friday in the Bronco Student Center from 7 p.m. to
12 a.m.

This year the night will have a Paris theme incorporated into
the festivities through decor, food and attire.

“We are going to have props from the theater department, little
two-seater cafe tables and a lamp post,” said Kevyn Gardner, a
fifth-year chemistry student and science council president.

French crepes as well as a disc jockey are in the works to make
the night complete, but the games, which make casino night
legitimate, are a certainty for the event.

Three tables of blackjack, roulette and craps will be set up in
Ursa Major with trained dealers who the students can learn from and
ask questions if unsure of the ins and outs of the games.

“When you enter, you get a set amount of fake money like paper
cash,” said Gardner.

“You can go to the tables and start playing and at the end of
the night turn in your chips for an opportunity to win certain
prizes.”

The drawing at the end of the night features secondary prizes of
gift card and gift baskets.

The grand prize is a three day and two night midweek Las Vegas
trip.

The winner gets to choose to stay at the Riviera, Gold Coast or
Tropicana hotel and casino.

Casino night is the largest fundraiser of the year for the
council and is open to all majors.

Last year’s attendance reached 250, but the council is aiming
for at least 300 students this year.

“Our biggest fundraiser of the year has gone on for so long that
it is just known to occur each year and we get a good amount of
money from the tickets,” said Gardner.

“It really helps when we can get sponsors, whether on campus or
off campus,” she said.

Admission into the game night is $20 presale and $25 at the
door, which allots students a certain amount of fake cash to use
throughout the night and rack up chips. The council encourages
semi-formal attire, but a strict dress code is not required.

This year, the council is doing something new with tickets by
using a will-call system.

Club members can pay their respected eBoard members in advance
for tickets and a list will be at the door the night of the
fundraiser with names of all who paid.

This ensures tickets will not get lost in the process.

The Science Council has another option for students who want a
tangible ticket.

Those tickets will be available in the resource center room,
which is the science council’s office in building 8, room 48.

Students can e-mail the council at sciencecouncil@gmail.com.
