An estimated 1,500 people from all around Los Angeles and Orange
County attended Old World Village’s Oktoberfest in Huntington Beach
on Oct. 9.
For 32 years the Village has been celebrating and hosting the
world renowned holiday Oktoberfest from Munich, Germany.
It created a real “old world” vibe in the middle of busy
Huntington Beach, surrounded by large hotels and the 405
Freeway.
Patrons attended the event for the social and celebratory
aspects.
“Aside from the beer? [I’m here] just to spend time with my
bros,” said David Tosti, from Laguna Beach. “It’s a good event with
good friends, hanging out and beer.”
The main event is held in the beer garden, where food and
souvenir vendors were selling everything from sausages to t-shirts
to boot-shaped beer glasses.
Shot girls dressed in the traditional Dirndl dresses walked
throughout the event serving J_Òå_germeister.
Spaten Oktoberfest, the world’s first Oktoberfest beer, was
featured at the event along with many other domestic drafts.
Aside from all of the beer and the enjoyment of its
bountifulness, Oktoberfest has rich German tradition running all
through the event.
In the festival hall, live bands like Frankenrauber and
Klaustaler played authentic German tunes.
Other performances included The Diamond Sisters, identical
acrobat twins, and The Chicken Dance, which originated from a Swiss
accordion player in the 1950s.
Friday nights at the Old World Village Oktoberfest have come to
be known as “frat-house nights” where many people in their early
20’s come to party hard.
Although alcohol consumers made up the bulk of the population,
the event included a wide collection of activities for all
ages.
Kinderfest, an event held every Sunday, features annual Dotson
races and other entertainment for the whole family, where residents
can even bring their dogs.
The first Oktoberfest was credited to a party held celebrating
the marriage of King Joseph Maximilian of Bavaria and Princess
Theresa of Saxonie.
The original 16 day celebration has been extended by many venues
to month-long celebrations.
The Old World Village’s event ends Nov. 1.
